About Ka'u
Kau district is made up of several small towns surrounded by ranch and forest land. Waiohinu is a small, quaint Hawaiian village (population: about 300) located near South Point(Ka Lae), the southernmost point in the USA -- and just 35 miles west of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Mark Twain wrote about his times in Waiohinu and the off shoots of a monkey pod tree he planted are still a favorite stop of travelers passing thru the area. Sugar was once the backbone of the of the area and the towns of Naalehu and Pahala are beautiful examples of an old plantation town.

The semi-tropical "Big Island" of Hawaii (also known as "The Orchid Isle" and "The Volcano Isle") is the largest, most southern, and newest island in the Hawaiian chain. Measuring about 93 miles by 76 miles at its extremes -- with 4000+ square miles of land area -- Hawaii is twice as large as all the other Hawaiian islands combined. About 130,000 friendly people call it home. And the Big Island is always growing, due to ongoing eruptions of our live volcano (Kilauea), a major tourist attraction.

The Big Island hosts 11 of the worlds 13 climactic zones. Its landscape varies widely, you will find rainforests and deserts, snow-covered mountains, lush jungles and canyons, and black lava beaches. It boasts the worlds highest mountain (measured from the oceans floor to the mountains peak) and finest astronomical sites -- and our worlds most active volcano.

Hawaii really IS a big island. Sight-seeing can take weeks if you have the time! We have canyons, deserts, dolphins, historic sites, lava flows, rainforests, rivers, sand (black, white, and green), snow, superb sunrises and sunsets, tropical fish, waterfalls and 1000-foot chasms, and whales to watch. The Big Island includes five major mountains: Mauna Kea (13,796 feet), Mauna Loa (13,677 feet), Hualalai, Kohala, and Kilauea (our active volcano). Winter brings snow to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where temperatures measure a brisk 31F to 43F year-round!
